Few men know how to pick out lingerie for their wife or
girlfriend.
This is understandable because it can be
confusing to select the right size, color, style, and fabric with all
the variety available. Here are some tips on choosing lingerie for that
special someone.
First, think about what she likes. Remember that she, not you, will be
wearing this, and you want to please her. Make your selection with the
intent to get her something she will love to wear. If she’s not into
lace, don’t buy lace. If she likes sheer items, see what’s available in
sheer. Does she prefer silk to cotton or cotton to silk? Would she like
a couple of see-through teddies? Or would she put them away and never
wear them, even though you would like to see her in them? The rule is to
keep what she likes in mind.
If you don’t know her preferences, check out her lingerie drawer. If
she’s your new girlfriend, ask her sister. Check for type of fabric,
colors, and size. She may be flattered if you get her a size too small,
even if she has to take it back, but if you get her a large and she
wears a small, you’re likely to be in trouble. Avoid buying anything
that says “control” on the label. You don’t want to suggest that she
needs to firm up or flatten her tummy or rear. She would probably not
appreciate receiving control lingerie as a gift.
Be sure to have your gift wrapped professionally. Presentation will mean
a lot to her. Dainty lingerie will look better nicely wrapped up than it
will if you wrap it up yourself in leftover paper from your cousin's
birthday.
If you’re uncomfortable shopping for lingerie in the stores, check out
online lingerie stores. You might start at Victoria's Secret, but major
department stores like Macy’s and Nordstroms also sell lingerie. Keep
your receipt just in case it’s the wrong style, size, or color.
What are the different types of lingerie available? Just about anything
you can imagine! Ask yourself why you want to buy her lingerie. Is it to
let her know you love her? If so, a crotchless or see-through item
probably won’t send that message. But if it’s for your anniversary, she
might appreciate something a little more risqué. Bras alone come in many
different materials and styles, including push up, plunge, backless,
strapless, gel filled, padded, underwire, seamless, strapless, open cup,
and sheer.
If you are purchasing a bra and panty set, you will definitely need to
know her exact size. Always check out her lingerie drawer beforehand and
note the size of both the bra and the panties. Most places sell matching
sets, and some sets are designed to be mixed and matched. Be sure to
select the type of panties she likes. Don’t buy her thongs if you’ve
never seen her wear them. Notice whether she likes standard panties,
sports style, or high-cut bikini panties.
Selecting sleepwear can be as confusing as selecting lingerie. Baby doll
pajamas are a popular item, with thin straps, a plunging V neckline, and
short matching panties. They come in other styles as well, usually in
silk or satin, materials that always make a woman feel good about
herself. If, however, she feels that her breasts are too big or too
small, or thinks her stomach is too big, you might avoid baby doll
pajamas.
Slips and chemises are similar to baby doll pajamas, only a little
longer and better at concealing any perceived problems with the breasts,
butt, or stomach. They are also usually made of silk or satin.
You can buy gowns that are full-length versions of the baby doll style.
Many are lacey or see-through and can help put your woman in the mood.
Robes often come with baby dolls, slips, chemises, and gowns. A pajama
set might not sound sexy, but if it is silky and soft and buttons up the
front, it can make your woman feel sexy and warm, especially if she is a
plus size (size 18 or larger). Boxer sets with tight tops, thin straps,
and a V neckline, are also popular. These sets also come in different
styles with standard T-shirt tops.
If you’re looking for lingerie to spice up your love life, consider
Frederick's of Hollywood (also available online). This company has been
selling sexy lingerie for over 50 years. They have a wide selection of
garter belts, bustiers, corsets, teddies (similar to the baby doll, but
one piece), crotchless panties, and fishnet stockings. Many of these
items are not available at conventional stores that sell lingerie.
The type of lingerie best to buy your love will depend a lot on her
self-esteem as well as her preferences. Many plus size women love sexy
little teddies, but some will shy away from them for fear of exposing
too much of themselves. Most stores sell plus size lingerie that is less
revealing. If your love is athletic, she might like a boxer set. Thin
women tend to look good in anything, but especially teddies, corsets,
and baby doll pajamas.
When shopping for lingerie, keep in mind what she likes. It’s probably
safe to buy her something similar in style, color, and fabric to the
lingerie she already has. But, just in case, keep the receipt!
